Become a Minnesota Notary Public

1. Complete the Notary Application.

2. Mail the completed application, with the $120 fee, to: Minnesota Secretary of State – Notary First National Bank Building 332 Minnesota Street, Suite N201 Saint Paul, MN 55101 

3. Receive your commission certificate by mail. 

4. Register your commission certificate with your county and pay the $20 fee.

5. Buy your Minnesota notary stamp.

Congratulations! You are now a Minnesota notary public.

Minnesota Eligibility Requirements:

Applicant must be at least 18 years of age. Applicant must be either a Minnesota resident, or a resident of a county in IA, ND, SD, or WI and list the Minnesota County he or she will be filing in upon receiving their commission. Non-resident notary applicants must designate the Secretary of State as their agent for service of process.

Remember, when you notarize documents:

    • All document signers must personally appear before you.
    • Assess whether each document signer is competent.
    • While not responsible for the content of a document, alert the signer to any blanks.
    • Establish the identity of each signer through personal knowledge or with I.D. documents.
    • Have all parties sign the document.
    • Complete the notarial certificate - this may include requiring the signer to give a verbal oath or acknowledgement.
    • Use your stamp.
    • Make an entry in your Notary Journal, if you use one.
    • An additional "Real Estate Closing Agent License" from the MN Department of Commerce may be required when processing certain real estate and mortgage documents.
